How
does your product differ from that of Polycool or Insu?
It doesn't! In as much as it performs the same function,
(keeping your conservatory cool) it is exactly the same.
However, there are differences. Polycool's published technical
data gives a film thickness of 63 microns. It doesn't state
if this refer's to a flat or embossed film. In any event,
it is considerably thinner than our product at 75 microns
(flat) 110 microns (embossed film). Based on Polycool's
published data, Smart Poly inserts are almost 50% thicker.
To be fair, Insu's product appear to be the same thickness
as ours.
-
What
is the difference in the shapes of Polycool and Insu's Inserts?
It’s
a big question with a long answer. If you use the Polycool
recommendation and install the "u" shape you are
creating an opportunity to build up heat in the polycarbonate.
Polycarbonate expands and contracts as its temperature rises
and falls. By creating higher than normal temperatures within
the polycarbonate you will increase the rate of expansion
and contraction. Whilst in the short term this may not be
a problem the long term effects have yet to be determined!
Moreover, by creating a higher temperature in the top cavity
you may be increasing the chance on condensation in the
polycarbonate's lower cavity. The primary cause of condensation
is standing water in gutters. As the water evaporates, the
moist air rises and is sucked into the cavities which are
of a higher temperature. Both Insus's and Smart Poly Inserts
minimise heat build up in the polycarbonate and our own
experience has shown that where condensation exits, in 99%
of cases it disappears when inserts are fitted. What our
product and Polycool's have in common is that they both
expand and contract with the polycarbonate as they are held
under slight compression. Insu's rectangular profile simply
sits in the cavity. Unless, you flatten Insu's profile before
insertion you always run the risk of light seepage with
little slivers of light adversely affecting the visual appearance.
It defeats the object of having a folded profile in the
first place. One final point; its common sense to get the
reflective surface as close to the source of the heat (suns
solar energy) as possible. The closer to the top of the
poly the better.
-
How
do we know it will work?
The
product is tried and tested over a period of time. The technology
was developed back in the thirties in the USA. Since the
fifties, the technology has been used to reduce solar gain
through glass all over the world. It is the worlds most
used solar control medium. You can see the technology on
many office buildings that have a mirror like appearance
on their windows. In the UK, the concept of using the technology
within polycarbonate was developed by David Anderson of
Insu. To date over 10,000 conservatories throughout the
UK have Solar Inserts in their polycarbonate roofs. It’s
a customer driven product.
-
Is
the product guaranteed?
Yes,
we give a 10 year replacement guarantee against failure
in terms of delaminating, peeling or cracking. Will it last
the lifetime of you polycarbonate roof? The fact is no one
knows. Polycarbonate has a life of 15 to 25 years. To the
best of our knowledge the oldest polycarbonate roof with
inserts still working is approximately 12 years old (At
time of writing).
Smart
Poly produces over 100 conservatory roofs per week for the
new build market. The ten year guarantee provided by the
polycarbonate manufacturer is un-effected by the insertion
of Smart Poly in the recommended way. They will not guarantee
their polycarbonate if a “U” shape profile is used due to
excessive heat build up.

Is
the material used by NASA in space?
It’s
an issue raised on Polycool’s web site literature.
We wouldn't have a clue is the simple answer. NASA refused
to talk to us (understandably). However, we have established
from their research web site that commercial polyester (PET)
films have been tested for use in space. Our opinion is
that a variant of a core technology may have been applied
however, if you were to ask us if the actual film has been
used we think it is highly unlikely. For those of you that
feel it’s an important issue and have time on your
hands here’s the NASA web site http://techreports.larc.nasa.gov/ltrs/ltrs.html.....
good luck!
-
Is
it an easy DIY job?
If
the answer is yes to the following questions, just about
anyone can carry out an installation.
Can
you gain access to all your gutters from a pair of steps?
Is
the roof free from opening roof vents?
If
you cannot gain access to all the panels i.e. your panel
runs into a valley or gutter, you will have to remove the
panel. This is not a difficult job and is covered in our
fitting instructions. However, you may consider using an
experienced installer to assist you.
-
Do
you Provide a fitting service?
Yes,
we have independent experienced installers located throughout
the UK.We also have over 150 Approved Installers offering
a bespoke fitting service. They also offer a wide range
of blinds for home and conservatory.
-
I
have an opaque or bronze tint roof, will inserts make it
darker?
Yes,
you will loose a little light from your conservatory. However,
it is much less than any other solar control medium. It’s
true you can often retract blinds, but when they are closed
you loose virtually all the light penetration through the
roof. We have many customers who have installed Solar Inserts
into Bronze and Opal roofs to great effect. The reality
is that it’s the adjoining rooms that suffer the most.
The rule of thumb is that if you have an adjoining room
with no other natural light source, it will be slightly
darker.
-
Will
plants grow in my conservatory?
Generally,
plants need visible light and UV to grow. Although 99% of
UV is eliminated from penetrating the roof, enough visible
light and UV penetrated through the windows to ensure plant
growth. What plants do not like is constant high temperatures.
Smart Poly Inserts reduce the heat in your conservatory.
-
Will
my fabrics still fade?
Yes.
The only way of preventing fading is to cover the items
completely. However, the rate at which fading occurs is
reduced dramatically extending the life of your furnishings
and fabrics.
-
Is
glare reduced?
Yes
glare from the roof is reduced by up to 80% which will make
your conservatory more comfortable. To further reduce glare,
window blinds or window film should be installed.
-
What
is the difference between gold and silver?
Smartpoly’s range of Smart Poly Inserts
provide outstanding performance however, Smart poly’s
Gold/Gold insert is the Rolls Royce of inserts. It is almost
three times as thick as polycools inserts and the gold appearance
actually gives a better visual clarity and therefore a better
light quality than an insert which incorporates silver.
-
Are

roof structures. Our technical personnel will help you identify
your requirements.
